A traditional character portrait inspired by Adar from The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.
My intention was to capture not only Adar's recognizable features, but also the intensity, presence and emotional complexity associated with the character. The portrait combines detailed traditional portraiture with an expressive, atmospheric background to create a visual interpretation that goes beyond simple likeness.
Character & Atmosphere
For me, character portraiture is about finding the balance between likeness and artistic interpretation. Facial expression, light, texture and surrounding atmosphere all contribute to the way a character is perceived.
With Adar, I wanted to emphasize his distinctive presence and the darker, more dramatic atmosphere associated with the character. The artistic background supports the portrait while keeping the face and its emotional presence at the center of the artwork.
Process
The portrait was developed through a traditional, layered process, gradually building the facial features, textures and tonal contrasts to create depth and detail.
The background was painted as the final stage of the artwork. I worked with dark brown colores, black and white, together with black splatters, to create an atmospheric backdrop that complements the character.
